Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible to join Ubuntuu?

We welcome teens aged 14-17 who are either living in Africa or are part of the African diaspora globally. All participants must have parental consent and access to internet for regular communication.

What platforms do we use to communicate?

Our team will exchange emails between you and your exchange partner to help you connect. From there, you can decide on a communication platform that works best for both of you, such as WhatsApp, Zoom, or any other preferred method. Our goal is to make it easy and comfortable for you to stay in touch.

What happens if my exchange partner stops responding?

If your match becomes inactive for more than two weeks, notify your coordinator. We’ll attempt to resolve the situation or arrange a new match if needed.

How do you ensure participant safety?

Our role is to verify that participants are who they claim to be by requiring them to upload school identification and engage in email correspondence. Additionally, we advise participants to exercise caution.

What if I have issues with my exchange partner?

Our support team is always here to help! Contact our team immediately if you have concerns. We can provide mediation, guidance, or arrange a new match if necessary.

Can I choose my partner's country?

Yes, you can select your preferred country for an exchange partner; however, we cannot guarantee that your match will be from that country, as it depends on participant availability and other matching criteria.

How long does it take to get matched?

The matching process typically takes 1-2 weeks. We prioritize quality matches over speed to ensure meaningful connections.

How does the matching process work?

We carefully pair exchange partners based on three main factors: age group, shared interests, and communication preferences.

Is there a cost to join?

No, joining Ubuntuu is completely free! We believe in making cultural connections accessible to all youth.

How much time do I need to commit?

We recommend setting aside 40 min-1 hour per week for meaningful communication with your exchange partner through text exchanges, and 1 hour monthly for video calls.

Can I apply to be a Chapter Lead and an Executive?

Yes, you can apply to be both a Chapter Lead and an Executive! However, we recommend carefully considering your availability and capacity to fulfill the responsibilities of both roles effectively.
